Make Your Own Thermal Blanket

Join RAL Space for a 40 minute live, interactive make-along session, supported by worksheet.

Spacecraft need to survive the extreme temperatures in space: very hot when facing the Sun, down to -270 degrees C in deep space! To protect the equipment on board, technicians at RAL Space make special layers of insulation by hand. Find out how these blankets are made and why they are vital for a successful space mission, using knowledge of heat transfer.

This is a 40 minute live, interactive make-along session, supported by worksheet. To take part in the make-along, students will need ice, tin foil and netting from fruit e.g. oranges. Make-along not mandatory to session.
