The programme combines on-site technical skills training and academic study at a local college in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Ellesmere Port.

This electrical engineering course will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to join Scottish Power as an Apprentice on their Apprenticeship Programme. The course is based in both the workshop and classroom ensuring you get a combination of practical and technical skills providing an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed for either an apprenticeship or higher-level studies in Electrical Engineering. You will receive a Safety Passport and gain Emergency First Aid qualifications as part of your programme.

As part of the course you will attend training sessions with ScottishPower at their training centre and at the end of the course may be offered a place on their apprentice programme. The Engineering Pre-Apprenticeship Programme is sponsored by ScottishPower; it is not a permanent role. You will receive a monthly £200 allowance as a contribution towards your travel to a local college.

About the Programme

As part of the course, you will attend sessions with ScottishPower at their training centre and may be offered a place on their apprentice programme. This training will involve learning about overhead lines and jointing and cabling practical skills. These opportunities will be supported by your College lecturers. Practical work experience with ScottishPower will help you to gain knowledge of the engineering industry and will heighten your employability skills.

You will be taught by staff with extensive experience in the electrical engineering industry. You will also have access to College workshops where you will use up-to-date technology and equipment. The course is based in both the workshop and classroom ensuring you get a combination of practical and technical skills. The course will also prepare you for further study in Electrical Engineering such as NC Higher Electrical Engineering offered at your sponsored College.

What you will learn

The course is a mixture of both workshop and classroom sessions providing an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed for either an apprenticeship or higher level in studies in Electrical Engineering. Subjects studied include:

If you’re considering applying you should have an interest in electrical engineering, be highly motivated with a positive attitude and have a willingness to learn in addition;

  • In Scotland – Two National 5s or equivalent in Maths, English and/or a STEM related subject (we will also consider National 4 awards or equivalent).
  • In England & Wales – Two GCSE’s at Grade A–C / 4-9 from Maths, English and/or a STEM related subject.
