Women into Home Building programme

The Home Builders Federation (HBF), with a collaboration of home builders, developed the Women into Home Building programme to address the gender imbalance in the home building industry and increase awareness of site management careers.

The programme was launched in January 2023 and has since supported 92 women in gaining site management experience and valuable networking links with employers. over 25 women have secured employment in the industry so far.

The programme offers training and insight sessions into the role of a site manager and the home building industry, as well as a two-week work placement for hands-on experience, and the opportunity to connect with industry professionals.

The Women into Home Building programme offers placements across England, Scotland and Wales.  Training and insight take place online, followed by a two-week placement on a home building site in your local areaCandidates will also receive a contribution to travel and childcare costs.

What Does a Site Manager Do? 

A site manager is responsible for managing the construction of a development, ensuring the site programme is planned, delivered and effectively monitored on a daily basis and that health and safety, quality, customer care, and cost targets are met.

As a site manager, no two days are the same. Site managers liaise with architects, surveyors and the building trades to ensure a project is on track and there are enough staff, machinery and materials to get the job done. If you like project planning, one of the most varied and exciting opportunities is in site management.

What Does a Career In Site Management Look Like?

Trainee Assistant Site Managers can earn between £24,000 and £30,000.

Trained Assistant Site Managers can earn between £35,000 and £46,000.

Experienced Site Managers can earn up to £62,000.

Senior or Chartered Site Managers can earn in excess of £75,000.

Salaries are dependent upon the location/region, employer, level of responsibility and experience.

 

Eligibility Criteria

Selection for the Women into Home Building programme is based on the eligibility criteria as follows. Candidates must:

– Be aged 18+

– Have obtained Maths & English GCSE Grade 4/C and above (or equivalent)

– Have proof of Right to work in the UK for at least the next 3 years (not on a student or Graduate visa)

– Hold a valid Licence to drive in the UK & use of a vehicle during the two-week work placement

– Have not previously taken part in the programme within the last two years 

– Be able to commit to the programme dates

– Be able to commit to a full-time trainee position (if successful)
